Animals in your attic: How to get Animals out of your Roof

Man has long lived in tandem with nature’s furry friends but in some instances, cohabitation with wildlife can become a dangerous hazard. Every one in a while you may find yourself needing to vacate an unwanted guest from your home. If you’ve ever had animals in your attic or roof, this blog is for you. We’ll go over a few humane ways to safely evacuate a four-legged friend from your home.

Animals in your attic

1. Animals in your attic: Check for entry points

Before you start trying to get rid of unwanted wildlife it’s important to figure out their point or points or entry. Be on the lookout for gaps, cracks, and unusual looking crevices. Sometimes gaps under the eaves of your roof can be the culprit. Remember, if you happen to notice animals in your attic they’re likely seeking protection from the elements or looking for a safe place to keep their young. Alternatively, if you have opened food items in your attic these could also be what’s attracting some furry attention. At any rate, zeroing in on how these critters are gaining access to your roof and/or attic will help you come up with a plan for sealing entry points once you’ve safely vacated them from the area.

2. Animals in your attic: Trim away surrounding trees

If your home’s property has trees, it’s important to check and see if any of the branches are acting as bridges for wildlife to gain access to your roof/attic. Wildlife like squirrels and raccoons are excellent climbers. Neighboring trees that are close to your attic could be how these little creatures are getting up to your roof. You can help eliminate some of the problem by keeping your branches trimmed and within an adequate distance away from your roof. This is especially important if you notice a tree that’s close to any entry points you have identified. This will help prevent animals in your attic.

3. Animals in your attic: Evict your curious critters

Regardless of your stance towards dealing with unwanted wildlife, there are many humane approaches you can take that are effective in making sure you don’t have animals in your attic. For one, you can spray your attic and/or roof with pest-deterring scents. For a list of scents critters such as squirrels find less than enjoyable, check out this website. There are also sprays on the market which mimic animal urine scents. If a squirrel or raccoon smells urine from a threatening animal, it may deter them from entering the premises.

4. Animals in your attic: Catch and release

Once you’ve properly identified entry points, removed food that could attract creatures, and sprayed scents geared towards deterring certain wildlife, it’s time to employ a catch and release system. There are many humane catch and release cages on the market. By placing a yummy treat inside the cage you are likely to tempt your furry friend. It’s important to check your cage regularly so make sure you can relocate any caught critters in a timely manner. If you do find your cage has a guest, safely relocate the animal at a decent distance from your home.

5. Animals in your attic: Seal entry points

Now that your furry friends have vacated the premises it’s time to seal their points of entry. Make sure you close off any gaps under your eaves, trim away nearby trees, and seal up any cracks and crevices where creatures could gain access once again.
